Survey Shows Almost 75% of Canadians Fear Water Damage, Yet Most Don’t Take Preventative Measures to Protect Their Homes

Moen uncovers top concerns on Canadians minds when it comes to leaks and offers solutions to help minimize risk

Oakville, Ontario… Water damage costs Canadians an astounding $2 billion annually, solidifying it as one of the leading causes of property damage in the country*. So it comes as no surprise that a recent survey from Moen**, the number one consumer faucet brand in North America, found that almost 75% of Canadians are somewhat or very concerned about potential leaks or water damage in their home.

“Our findings** show that most Canadians are worried about water damage, and rightfully so,” said Jeff Barnes, vice president, business development, Moen Smart Water. “Yet, we were surprised to uncover that, despite their anxiety, few are taking steps to help prevent leaks in the first place – with less than 10 percent of respondents currently having a leak detection device. The good news is that with the advent of smart technology, it’s now easier than ever to help prevent water damage and give homeowners peace of mind that their space is secure.”

One such smart solution is the Flo Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff from Moen, which offers whole-home leak prevention, peace of mind and enhanced security. It constantly monitors the pressure and flow rate of the water in the home’s pipes and tracks water usage 24/7, allowing the intelligent system to track leaks as small as a drop a minute – anywhere in the home. It can also automatically shut off the water before a catastrophic leak occurs. The device is installed on a home’s main water supply line and connects to the Moen Smart Water App so users can receive notifications and control a home’s water from anywhere at any time.

“Given that nearly 40 percent of Canadians have suffered a leak in their home – with nearly 20 percent having suffered catastrophic water damage – a product like the Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff can make a huge difference in stopping damage before it starts – and save homeowners money on costly repairs,” adds Barnes.

Not only can a device like the Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff help prevent the expense caused by leaks, it also has an added benefit – potentially reducing insurance premiums. The Moen survey found that over two-thirds of Canadians are somewhat or very concerned about the cost of their homeowner’s insurance, but with products like the Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff, insurance companies may choose to reduce rates for homeowners, as the device is proven to decrease water damage incidents by 96%***.

“Water damage can be devastating, both financially and emotionally,” notes Barnes. “From the stress of affording repairs to the sadness caused by losing treasured items and mementos, it’s a situation no one wants to face – and thanks to smart technology, no one has to. With products like our Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff, homeowners can have peace of mind their home is secure, 24/7.”
